I would have to say that this competition is the main reason I got hooked on photography. (That, and growing up surrounded by National Geographic magazines).
I used to anxiously await the November issue of BBC Wildlife magazine, with it’s ‘Competition winners’ insert, and pour over the images, jaw down, being more and more stunned by each subsequent page capturing nature’s wildest and most ethereal subjects.
I even entered one year, and made it to the semifinals – top 1000 out of 10000 entries – not too shabby, but far from being included in the Best of the Best. Maybe one day I’ll show you that image here.
If you ever need inspiration or motivation, to be awed and dazzled by what’s out your front door, and to recognize what many photographers endure to get The Shot (sitting in blinds for 2 weeks in the freezing cold, scuba diving with polar bears, staring into the eye of an alligator at too-close-range), check out these images.
Watch out for falling jaws.
