Storm Wake

I know the recent storms bearing snow and freezing rain have wreaked havoc on many homes out East. No heat or power for days, and sketchy roads and cancelled flights, are not welcome – at any time of year, much less during the holidays. I hope everyone stays safe and warm, looking out for friends, family and neighbours who might need help. I ventured out to do some last minute Christmas shopping, and took the back roads around town. While the storms were menacing and devastating, they left some beauty behind in their wake.

Backyard entertainment

The snow has been falling all week, gently but steadily, and the world is blanketed in the deep silence of winter. The birds are starting to depend on our backyard feeder – there’s a Downy Woodpecker that has made permanent residence on the suet, the Cardinal pair shows up regularly at dusk, and the Goldfinches chatter away in gossiping groups, nibbling on the niger seeds.

Meanwhile, the squirrels are doing all they can to stake their claim to the spoils. While a seed or two gets tossed to the ground by the birds, there isn’t much but crumbs for the mammals to scrounge for. This little guy positioned himself under the feeder, staring at the window, and almost seems to be pleading, “please, please, take pity on me – all I want is a few sunflower seedsto fill my empty belly!” He is kinda cute (check out his chestnut-coloured vest!) and I do feel a tinge of sympathy for him, but then I remember how he chewed through my Christmas lights, and what a bully he is to the red squirrels, and I don’t feel all that charitable. Then again, it is the Christmas season…I think I might just embrace the spirit of the holidays and put out some peanuts.

Winter Light Study

It’s freezing cold out, but when the sky is blue, the sun is blinding, the snow is fresh and powdery, your cheeks are frozen and you don’t want to stop moving for fear you’ll freeze in place, man, does it ever make you feel alive! There’s no way in heck I am pulling out my DSLR when it’s 25 below zero (celcius), but when I see shadows on fresh snowfall, I can’t help but snap a few pics on my phone.

Here, winter light, and winter shadows, three ways:

Music Mondays: Frightened Rabbit

I might be a bit behind the eight ball, considering this song was released 3 years ago, and there are over a million views (so far). But hey, if they’re new to me , maybe they’re new to you, and maybe if I like ’em (and I do!), so will you.

Have a listen to this ‘Scottish indie rock band’ and let me know what you think.

Embracing winter

Let’s be like this family of river otters – let’s get outside, and embrace winter in all it’s glory –  a walk in the snow, some playtime on the ice, and maybe even some sliding down hills (on skis, sleds, or even your rear end). ‘Cause there’s no point in staying inside for months complaining about the cold, when there’s so much fun to be had!

Seen on the Rideau River January 2013, a family of 4 river otters, loving life.

Inside weather

I know, I know, I can’t complain about the cold (like in the prairies), or the storms (like in Europe), or even the bugs (like in summertime), but this gray, overcast, rainy weather is slowly turning the snow to slush, and quickly turning my brain to mush. I am not embracing the winter here in Ontario as much as I did in Alberta – there’s something about crisp, cold air, and dry fluffy snow, all covered in bright blue skies, that is invigorating. This weather is definitely not inspiring me to take pictures, no sirree. So I’m digging through my images to find one suiting to the day. A few hours romping through a museum, hiding from the weather sounds like a good way to spend a day, don’tcha think?

This is The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, a plaster sculpture by Bill Reid, in the main hall of the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa.

Music Mondays: Mellow Tunes

‘Tis the season –  for excitement and merriment and socializing.

But lately I’ve also felt like nesting – tucking myself in under a blanket, with a crackling fire in the fireplace, snow falling outside, wine in one hand, and a book in the other.

On those days that you might be feeling melancholy, have a listen to these tunes.
